It has nothing to do with race either. First, the authors he recommends are of Hispanic and Indian heritage - neither is black. But beyond that, hip hop is about critical analysis of society through accessible lyrics and memorable beats. The danger is that the narratives of oppression, uplift and solidarity are being distorted, repackaged and commodified for profit under the guise of "education." Gosa's fear is legitimate - if this continues hip hop may be perverted into something that justifies the status quo rather than challenges it.

(Side note - I am working for Dr. Priya Parmar on her documentary Lyrical Minded)Lucashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00395501278369047737noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-280379846265476813.post-47191226186099099242010-09-08T20:14:19.244-07:002010-09-08T20:14:19.244-07:00The first time I heard of something similar to wha...The first time I heard of something similar to what you call hip hop education I was at a summer festival in Oakland.

Would this be an issue if the teacher or hustler was Black?miminoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-280379846265476813.post-89526050088794166132010-09-04T09:33:11.286-07:002010-09-04T09:33:11.286-07:00This article is complete garbage. Educational rap is pimpin' our system, huh? Kids could give two sh!ts bout education if their role models don't. So is it that bad if a teacher tries to become a role model to encourage higher learning. Oh wait, its the white devil trying to steal african roots to pimp poor people out of their money. Dr. Gosa's motivation is based on fear.andynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-280379846265476813.post-70652180388086951682010-09-04T08:26:40.626-07:002010-09-04T08:26:40.626-07:00I think this article brings a lot a questions to t...I think this article brings a lot a questions to the table. I can't begin to imagine what some of the answers are. I cannot escape the subtle bent for two situations that I have considered passe' ever since I began studying the world around me 'as is' instead of through the lenses of possibility. 1. this idea that the 'education system' is designed to educate children and 2. there is some system of communal, socialistic, or shared benefit in this country - children included.

I never get past the lack of perspective when I read brilliant articles that seem to miss the point of 'what is possible'. This kind of writing into the impossible always, always, always presents the reader with more questions and only rehashed answers that are meant to taunt the notion of a solution being at hand.

We need to stop the lucid dreaming that there is some equitable or caring institution out there besides the ones we build ourselves. The problem with that is the 'demon' of funding. How would anything get moving in any viable way without money? Where can big bucks come from? I don't see Americans or Harlemites funding HCZ out of pocket. Come on son (Dr. Travis Gosa) - change your political/temporal perspective for a hot second and take a second look.Christopher Naznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-280379846265476813.post-29157810650060518902010-09-04T08:08:41.491-07:002010-09-04T08:08:41.491-07:00Anonymous critique is weak and goes in the trashpi...Anonymous critique is weak and goes in the trashpile of constructive dialogue. Not because of the inability to use ad hominem, but because people like to know who is saying what. Is Mr. Duey really hustling the system to make profits? Have you contacted him personally to ask why he does what he does? I'd bet if you had a different view, your opinion might not be the same. Not everyone is using hip hop in mainstream mcdondalds commercials because its what will appeal to the mass to generate profit while raping the youth. I appreciate your stance to fight for what's right but I think what your fighting to prove to others should be investigated a little further by the sources. I felt indicted at first, but realized that it all boils down to advantages and disadvantages. When using Hip Hop in education actually creates boundaries and chaos for the educator, but they fight to consider the culture anyway, this might be the right hustle. However, when we see people who sacrifice nothing and gain everything just because they start to use Hip Hop, we have to follow the money. Thanks again. Peace...BTW...it's AyoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-280379846265476813.post-3897838580351937772010-09-03T12:01:30.753-07:002010-09-03T12:01:30.753-07:00@Travis - wanted to thank you for the guest blog! ...@Travis - wanted to thank you for the guest blog! anytime please :-)
gotta express great appreciation for this understanding of the latest takeover..lol.
